About Dr. Hintz (They/He)

Greetings!

I am so excited and honored you’re here! I’m Javin (Jay-vin), a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, mental health therapist, and certified sex therapist. I enjoy partnering with individuals and couples/relationships to help them connect with themselves and others through integrational, strength-based, and collaborative approaches in ways that are meaningful for them, at their pace, and following their lead in where they’d like to go. Pretty vague, right? I know it is, but it is a position I like to settle into with intentionality and purpose.

I approach the healing work from a place of curiosity and compassion while encouraging you to go further and deeper at a pace that you're comfortable with. Within the non-judgmental space, I may ask questions or give you things to think about, which might be uncomfortable from time-to-time. I mention this now because healing work can be uncomfortable and I view my role as a partner that comes along side you for this part of your journey. While the work may sometimes be challenging, liberating, painful, empowering, or bring up unexpected things, I believe the work is valuable and important. It is with this frame that I engage individuals or couples/relationships to work on the presenting issues as well as areas that may be impacted. Some areas of work may include gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, trauma, relationship conflicts/decisions, communication barriers, sex and sexuality concerns, other relationships concerns, anxiety, and many others.

Prior to starting Twelve Oaks Center for Healing and Sexual Wellness, I worked in a variety of settings ranging from homeless and sexually exploited youth to survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, and I have done extensive work in grief, loss and trauma with individuals and their families. Throughout my career, I noticed threads of humanity related to sex and sexuality, an integral part of our existence and how we interact with the world around us. In my experience, I quickly realized that sexuality is an area that often goes without acknowledgement or exploration, many times because of discomfort of providers or shame experienced by the person receiving services. With this realization, I decided to pursue my PhD in Clinical Sexology. While I incorporate sexuality as an important part of the process and exploration, it does not mean that is all we are going to talk about. In fact, if we think about areas of relationship struggles, self-esteem concerns, depression, anxiety, work or family stressors, and so on, we recognize there is no silo in the human experience and that one area impacts another. I view my role as a guide and a partner in your healing journey.

One of my biggest take-aways from my professional experience is that all areas within the human experience meld together like a giant ball of multi-colored yarn, representing the beauty and complexity of what we bring to the table. So, with that, I invite you to join me and settle into the space of intentional uncertainty, knowing that we may very well start with a blue string and soon find ourselves knitting with a green, yellow, or some other color before we know it and that is totally okay. Maybe the knitting isn’t the best analogy because if I’m being honest, and I am, I don’t know how to knit! But you get the point. Now to clarify, does that mean we aren’t intentional about where we start? Absolutely not. In our work together, we will start where you’d like and we will shift together, while continuing to check-in with the process and one another to ensure we continue to move forward in a healthy and healing way as things come up.

It would be my honor to work with you and to be a part of your healing journey to a happier, more confident, connected and empowered you.

Sex and sexuality are important, valid, and essential parts of our lives. I believe sex and sexuality should be normalized, explored, and celebrated with the intricacies that show up in unique ways. As an important part of the human experience, other life stressors or transitions may impact our sexual health and vice versa. I do this work from a sex positive and affirmative place. My goal is to help you move from where you are to where you want to be. No matter where you are on your journey as an individual or relationship, there is no better place to start than where you are. Some of my specialized areas of interest around sexuality include bringing joy to sex and sexuality, exploration of sexuality and gender identities, helping parents talk to their children about sexuality, low or mismatched desire, sexual anxiety/shame, partner betrayal, compulsive and out-of-control sexual behavior, diverse relationship structures (ethical non-monogamy, open marriage, etc.), BDSM/kink, sexual trauma, and more. Through this work, I hold a safe, affirming, compassionate and non-judgmental space where all are welcomed and celebrated as they are.

As a non-pathologizing and evidence-based psychotherapy model, IFS is a way of understanding personal and intimate relationships, which helps people heal by accessing and healing their protective and wounded inner "parts." This work supports individuals understand and integrate their inner "parts," leading to greater self-compassion, emotional regulation, and resilience, effectively treating various presenting concerns such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, relationship issues, low self-esteem, and chronic pain by fostering a strong internal leader (the Self) to guide these internal systems.

Brainspotting (BSP) is a powerful and effective focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing, and releasing core neuro-physiological sources of emotional and physical pain, trauma, dissociation and other unhealthy coping mechanisms. What we have learned is that the logical part of the brain engaged in talk therapy is not where our traumatic experiences are stored. Instead, these traumatic experiences are stored in the primitive brain, which is why those unhealthy coping skills or trauma responses occur so suddenly sometimes. Brainspotting helps the client access the primitive parts of the brain to release the trauma in the brain and body for lasting healing and a healthier you.

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a powerful and innovative listening therapy designed to help regulate the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system regulates essential bodily functions and is commonly known as what engages the “fight/flight” or “freeze” responses. SSP uses filtered music to “send cues of safety” to the nervous system, helping to restore a person’s ability to interpret safety and improve their responses to stress. This leads to a person feeling more balanced, calm, and more connected to others with deeper and more meaningful relationships.
